About
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ceren Günenç Beşer was born in Ankara in 1980. Primary and middle school were attended at Mersin Private Toros College, and Mersin Private Toros Science High School was completed in 1998 as runner-up of the school with an academic average of 4.98 (5.00). Admitted to Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1998 and graduated as a medical doctor in 2004 with a grade average of 77.87 (100).
Doctoral studies began in 2006 at the Department of Anatomy, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. During the doctorate, courses were taken in the locomotor system, head and neck anatomy, the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems, urinary and genital systems, endocrine glands, the central nervous system, advanced neuroanatomy, microscopic anatomy techniques and sense organs. The qualifying exam was passed successfully on 30 January 2008, and the doctorate in anatomy was awarded on 15 September 2010 after a successful thesis defense, with an academic average of 3.91 (4.00).
The thesis was a clinical, radiological and anatomical study titled “Evaluation of the Prevalence and Distribution of Atherosclerotic Plaques in the Abdominal Aorta and Its Branches,” carried out jointly by the Departments of Anatomy and Radiology of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. In this study, all branches and branching points of the abdominal aorta were evaluated one by one, and the presence, degree and type (soft, calcified and mixed) of atherosclerotic plaques were determined using the MDCT-CTA technique. Differences between sex and age groups were determined, and a reference study on the branches of the abdominal aorta and atherosclerosis was obtained from the results. The study was published in 2016 in the SCI-Expanded journal Folia Morphologica under the title “The prevalence and distribution of the atherosclerotic plaques in the abdominal aorta and its branches.” (DOI:10.5603/FM.a2016.0005).
Ceren Günenç Beşer worked as an instructor at the Department of Anatomy, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, between 2010 and 2016, and since 2017 has continued in the position of doctor instructor in the same department. After success in the associate professorship exam taken on 10 October 2017, qualified for the title of Associate Professor in the field of Anatomy.
While working at the Department of Anatomy, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, 17 publications have been produced in internationally indexed journals. The work has concentrated mostly on macroscopic anatomy, dissection, radiological anatomy and orthopedic anatomy. There are 30 works presented at international and national congresses and published in journals and booklets. Dr. Günenç Beşer and colleagues received the best oral presentation award at the 19th National Anatomy Congress held in Konya in 2018 for their study.
Contributed to the translation of twenty highly important reference books for anatomy from English into Turkish, and wrote chapters for three national reference books in anatomy.
More than ten courses have been attended throughout education and working life to advance the profession. Served as instructor in two courses. In 2013, traveled to Murcia, Spain, to work in the department's plastination laboratory, where plastination techniques with silicone, polyester and epoxy were learned. Since then, work has continued in the plastination laboratory. In 2016, attended the Brain and Fiber Dissection Course at Ege University in Izmir and learned fiber dissection techniques.
Served as project leader in the research infrastructure project “Purchase of Models Needed for the Student Laboratory of the Department of Anatomy” between 2016 and 2019.
Worked in the microscopic anatomy laboratory of the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait University, between 1 May and 1 September 2018. During this period, training and certification were received in the animal laboratory on working with laboratory animals, dissection and types of injection. Western blot, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques were then learned in the laboratory. During this time, work was done on a project in Goto-Kakizaki rats investigating the regulatory effect of metformin on diabetes and the expression of MAPK pathway proteins. Thus, the work advanced to the level of microscopic anatomy, embryology and the cellular level.
Since 2007, has served as a peer reviewer for journals such as “Anatomy,” indexed in ULAKBİM, other internationally indexed journals such as “Anatomy Research International” and “International Journal of Anatomical Variations,” and SCI-Expanded journals such as “Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy.” Also, since 2007, has worked as associate editor of the International Journal of Anatomical Variations.
Since 2010, anatomy courses have been taught at the Faculty of Medicine (Turkish and English programs), Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Occupational Therapy, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Health Sciences on Tissue, Skeletal and Peripheral Nervous System, Circulatory, Blood and Respiratory Systems, Gastrointestinal System and Metabolism, Nervous System, Endocrine and Urogenital System. Since 2017, doctoral courses titled Nervous System, General Anatomy, Clinical Anatomy of the Lower Extremity, Clinical Neuroanatomy, Spinal Cord and Spinal Nerves, and Afferent and Efferent Pathways have been taught, and a role as thesis advisor to a student continuing doctoral education in our department is held.
In September 2018, was also appointed as a faculty member to the Department of Simulation in Health Sciences, established within the Institute of Health Sciences of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, where the course “Cadaver-Based Simulation Applications” is taught in the master's program with thesis.
Dr. Günenç Beşer has an advanced level of English (2013 YDS: 87.5) and an intermediate level of French.
Between 2018 and 2019, Dr. Günenç Beşer completed the Ministry of Health-certified Acupuncture Training Program organized by the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Center of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, and since 2019 has continued acupuncture-related work at the acupuncture outpatient clinic of the Department of Anatomy, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine.
